My name is Susie Salmon.. like the fish

The Lovely BonesMy dad had been doing some volunteering around the Christmas season, and heard from a woman working there about this book, The Lovely Bones. My dad ended up buying the book for me, for Christmas. The book's been around for a while now, and it is very popular. After I had finished reading, I could see why.

This book was.. something else. I don't know wether I liked it or not, but I definitely do not regret reading it. This book is about a girl named Susie Salmon, who is raped and killed by her neighbour, and goes to Heaven. From there she must watch her parents, siblings and friends accept and deal with the news of her death, while her killer goes free. The book is written very well... It's confusing, sometimes, but I was fascinated by the reactions of her family as they try to heal and move on. Although, the book itself isn't exactly a real tear-jerker. It has its funny bits, but for the most part it's just frustrating, because you're thinking, "No! The killer's gonna get away! Aghhhh!"

After I read this book, every story I hear of kidnappings, etc. on the news is more shocking by a ten-fold. I actually found myself stopping, reflecting, on what had happened, imagining what it would be like to be the parent/friend/relative of these people. It's good, to be aware. We need to be aware. I'm also much more careful now, because of this book. Although it is sad, I find myself thinking about the story a lot. I find a book has done it's job if it has you wondering over it weeks after you have turned the last page. 4 out of 5 stars
